Prehospital EMS Quality Specialist

About The Position

This role supports the EMS Medical Director in overseeing regional and affiliated EMS clinical practices. The specialist assists in reviewing EMS adherence to protocols and standards of care, coordinating case reviews, and analyzing prehospital care times, destination decisions, and transfer processes. The position involves participating in trauma performance improvement activities, developing and monitoring QA/QI initiatives, and collecting/analyzing EMS-related data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Responsibilities include conducting reviews of patient care reports and emergency cases, tracking quality metrics, preparing reports and presentations, and ensuring adherence to regulations. The role also involves maintaining knowledge of EMS protocols and standards, managing records, and participating in relevant committees. Additionally, the specialist will identify educational needs, challenge working practices for process improvement, and provide service excellence.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensed Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • 5+ years related clinical work experience
  • Strong understanding of prehospital protocols, trauma systems, and emergency care operations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills within a highly complex environment.
  • Ability to follow timelines and manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to project deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change as needed in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize, be resourceful and work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Stop the Bleed certification (obtain within 1 year of position start) and must maintain certification.
  • QI/PI experience, preferred.
  • Experience working with local officials, municipalities, and state OEMS system preferred

Responsibilities

  • Support the EMS Medical Director in oversight of regional and affiliated EMS clinical practices.
  • Assist in review of EMS adherence to local, state and regional protocols and standards of care.
  • Assist in coordinating case review conferences and feedback sessions as needed.
  • Assist with review of prehospital care times, destination decisions, handoff communication, and transfer processes.
  • Participate in trauma performance improvement activities involving EMS care and transport decision-making.
  • Participate in the development and monitoring of quality assurance/quality improvement (QA/QI) initiatives related to prehospital care.
  • Collect, analyze, and report EMS-related data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement within prehospital patient care delivery.
  • Conduct retrospective and concurrent reviews of EMS patient care reports (PCRs), trauma activations, cardiac alerts, stroke alerts, and other emergency cases to evaluate protocol compliance and quality of care.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of EMS-focused quality improvement initiatives.
  • Track and Trend EMS quality metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Assist with preparation of reports, dashboards, and presentations related to EMS quality initiatives and outcomes.
  • Engage prehospital participation in trauma and medical case reviews, debriefings, and follow-up.
  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations governing EMS operations and hospital interactions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and compliance with all peer review and protected information.
  • Maintain current knowledge of EMS protocols, accreditation standards, and emergency preparedness requirements.
  • Assist with identifying cases requiring additional evaluation, provider feedback, or multidisciplinary review.
  • Maintain organized records of EMS quality reviews and educational activities.
  • Participate in committees and meetings as needed related to EMS operations, emergency preparedness, and other relevant realms.
  • Assist with the coordination of feedback processes that promote bidirectional communication between the hospital and EMS providers.
  • Identifies educational needs through quality review findings and performance data.
  • Challenges current working practices identifies process improvement opportunities and presents recommendations and solutions to management.
