About The Position

Assigned to perform and assume responsibility for tasks under the direct supervision of a certified teacher or teaching team, with a high degree of independent judgment, releasing the teacher from routine tasks. Assist individual students and small groups as needed. Interact with immediate supervisor, teachers and parents, as appropriate. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as, district policies procedures and regulations. This role also includes virtual and online duties as assigned, such as assisting in the creation and active participation in a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. Availability by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular school business hours to confer with district stakeholders is also expected.

Requirements

High school diploma/GED or higher
Forty-eight (48) hours from an accredited college or university
Experience working with students and parents
Must possess or be eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)
Must obtain a national criminal background check through the SBEC website within 30 days of hire
Must be able to communicate, listen, read, write, and comprehend the English language sufficiently to use it easily and readily in daily communication
Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with district employees, parents and students
Must be able to acquire certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Heimlich maneuver, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI)
Subject to the district's drug and alcohol screening policy and regulation

Nice To Haves

Must possess ability, skill, patience and understanding to work with students who have disabilities
Must be familiar with/able to use Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy (OT/PT) apparatus

Responsibilities

Reinforce skills and units of instruction that have been taught by the teacher.
Work with targeted at-risk students on a one-to-one basis, with small groups and the whole class, based on needs.
Assist with preparation of extension lessons such as cooking, music, poetry enrichment.
Assist students with integration of technology and educational media into the curriculum.
Assist the support teachers, technology teacher and librarian during scheduled times.
Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
Participate in selecting, planning, organizing and evaluating classroom instructional materials; assist teacher in preparing classroom displays and using instructional materials.
Incorporate discipline strategies and concentrate on social skills development throughout the school day, inside and outside classroom; reinforce proper etiquette during meals and snacks.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Assist in the creation and actively participate in a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular school business hours to confer with district stakeholders as needed.
Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
