About The Position

The Pre-Analytical Assistant I is responsible for general support functions within the Technical Operations Department. This role involves understanding specimen types, handling, and delivery, as well as compliance regulations related to test ordering. The position requires flexibility, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the ability to work effectively in a team-based environment. Tasks include sorting, racking, pickup and delivery of specimens, specimen storage, centrifugation, and aliquoting. The role also involves learning job duties, identifying and resolving specimen-related problems, meeting quality and production standards, and maintaining accurate documentation.

Requirements

  • Understanding of clinical department requirements with regard to specimen types and quantity needed for each test, specimen handling and delivery
  • Understanding of compliance regulations related to test ordering

  • High School Diploma or GED

Nice To Haves

  • Medical background preferred which includes medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
  • Previous experience in a production environment preferred
  • Familiarity with mainframe computers

  • Understanding how functions in Tech Ops and Specimen Processing work together and impact Technical departments and result quality
  • Identifying problems with specimen types, missing information, etc., with regard to sorting, racking, centrifuging, delivery, and storage of specimens
  • Resolving or forwarding information in support of timely problem resolution
  • Demonstrating an understanding of compliance policies related to test ordering
  • Researching test order information on translation tables, computer system, and the directory of services
  • Meeting quality and production standards within 6 months of completing training
  • Completing all required written documentation such that it is understandable to others, legible and within the assigned time frame
  • Reporting to work on time, and following attendance guidelines
  • Supporting the department's performance in the event of coworker absences
  • Learning additional functions within Tech Ops and Specimen Processing to allow timely progression to the next level
  • Performing other duties as assigned
