Practice Group Leader, Consulting
About The Position
The USC Marshall School of Business, Graduate Career Services, is seeking an experienced career services professional to join the MBA team as a Practice Group Leader (PGL) for their consulting practice. This role is part of a new practice group model within the Marshall Career Services team, which is comprised of over 30 professional staff and over 30 student staff. The team is dedicated to supporting approximately 8,200 undergraduate, specialty MS, and MBA students in achieving their professional goals. The PGL will be responsible for building a consulting-related practice that includes an employer portfolio, alumni and executives-in-residence, student clubs, peer advisors, and other resources to help MBA students, particularly full-time MBA students, secure internships and full-time jobs. The position reports to the Assistant Dean and Director of MBA Career Services.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Four years of full-time relevant experience (Career Services or direct industry experience).
- Specific knowledge of the consulting recruitment landscape and process.
Nice To Haves
- MBA or master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Career Counseling, or related discipline.
- Seven years of full-time relevant experience, including both Career Services and relevant industry experience.
Responsibilities
- Serve as lead strategist for the assigned practice group, making strategic decisions on resource allocation to drive student professional success.
- Ensure the delivery of career education, including resume and cover letter reviews, interview preparation, and industry-specific preparation, through various channels like one-on-one advising, group sessions, workshops, and leveraging staff, peer advisors, alumni, and technology.
- Build and maintain an employer portfolio to support the professional success of the practice area, ensuring adequate opportunities for internships and full-time employment outcomes for MBA students, and actively working to grow this portfolio annually.
- Plan and coordinate employer-facing events, providing leadership and support to the Practice Group Coordinator, and driving strong student engagement in career-enhancing programs.
- Leverage the Trojan Network to connect students with alumni, alumni with students, and capitalize on the network's willingness to support career initiatives.
- Cultivate and maintain an Alumni/Executive-in-Residence program to expand the practice group's reach and impact, including training and deploying qualified alumni volunteers.
- Actively monitor internship and full-time career outcomes for full-time MBA students, implementing solutions to continuously improve these outcomes.
- Build positive relationships with students, establish connections with student clubs and their leaders, attend club events, and maintain visible communication.
- Conduct one-on-one and group meetings with MBA students as needed, and participate in career preparation programs for incoming MBA students.
- Act as a creative and entrepreneurial leader, adapting strategies based on industry nuances and student needs, and knowing when to adjust or innovate.
- Maintain expertise in the respective industry, including connections to professional organizations, monitoring employment trends, and considering future industry implications (e.g., AI).
- Partner with MBA team members to ensure successful onboarding and preparation for incoming MBA students entering the practice group model, and support transitions between practice groups.
- Collaborate with the Practice Group Leader for Executive and Working Professionals to provide appropriate industry-specific support for those programs.
- Liaise with partners across Marshall Career Services, the Marshall School of Business, and USC to foster collaboration and ensure the organization is viewed as a strong partner.
