About The Position

North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic (NSLAC) is a dynamic nonprofit with a collaborative culture and the goal of becoming the model legal aid organization focused on suburban communities. The mission of NSLAC is to provide accessible, quality, equitable, free legal services in the areas of domestic violence, housing, and immigration to give low-income, at-risk community members access to justice and the opportunity to live productive and secure lives. NSLAC seeks a bilingual (English/Spanish) Practice Assistant to support our Immigration Law Practice. This role works closely with attorneys and DOJ-accredited representatives to assist with case preparation, client communication, and community outreach.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (required)
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 1 year of immigration experience, including: Naturalization, DACA, family petitions, consular processing, adjustment of status
  • U visas, VAWA, and familiarity with EOIR, BIA, and USCIS filings
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse populations
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced nonprofit environment
  • Availability for occasional evenings/weekends
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance, and access to a vehicle; ability to travel within Chicago’s northern suburbs

Nice To Haves

  • Additional experience preferred: removal/deportation, SIJS, asylum, U visa certification

Responsibilities

  • Prepare immigration forms and application materials across various case types
  • Conduct factual and legal research; track updates in immigration law and procedures
  • Assist with case management, including maintaining client files and preparing application packets
  • Draft correspondence and review case files for completeness
  • Provide interpretation at client meetings and translate documents
  • Enter and manage client data in case management systems
  • Communicate with clients regarding case status and document collection
  • Support workshops and clinics, including preparation and on-site logistics
  • Participate in ongoing immigration law training and professional development
  • Pursue DOJ Accreditation
  • Represent NSLAC at community events as needed
