About The Position

The Power Systems Technician supports the safe and reliable operation of electrical power systems through installation, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, and repair of high- and medium-voltage substation equipment. This includes switchgear, circuit breakers, power transformers, capacitor banks, DC systems, and associated station infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Completion of an Electrical Engineering Technology program, Electrical Apprenticeship, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3–5 years of experience in high voltage electrical systems.
  • Strong proficiency with electrical testing equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards and safety regulations (OHSA, Utility Work Protection Code, ESA).
  • Valid Driver’s License (DZ considered an asset).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with substation equipment testing, maintenance, and commissioning is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, testing, and inspections of substation equipment including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and DC systems.
  • Commission and decommission substations, equipment, and associated wiring.
  • Conduct diagnostic testing and thermographic scanning to identify potential issues and prevent failures.
  • Interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and asset data using CMMS and other systems.
  • Support construction, upgrades, and retrofits of electrical installations and protection and control systems.
  • Ensure substations and facilities are maintained in a safe, clean, and operational condition.
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards and company requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, utilities, manufacturers, and consultants to support field operations.
  • Adhere strictly to company and client safety protocols, promoting a strong safety culture on all job sites.
  • Utilize electrical testing equipment and tools with a high level of proficiency.
  • Assist in training and mentoring apprentices and junior team members.
  • Prepare tools, equipment, and materials for field assignments and ensure readiness.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
