About The Position

The role of a Power Systems Operator is critical to the operation of Vale’s High Voltage Power Distribution System and the Power Generating Plants. In this position, you will follow the Safety and Risk Management Plan developed for the department, as well as company standards and government regulations in the operation of the Vale High Voltage Power Distribution System and Generating Plants. You will also follow High Tension Switching Procedures to ensure a safe working environment for workers, coordinate all outages with operating plants before and during planned maintenance, and liaise with the IESO and Hydro One for operations and planned outages. Additionally, you will analyze power outages following company standards and established protocols, restore power to affected areas as soon as it is safe to do so, and follow established procedures and protocols to maximize the value of generation and reduce the cost of purchased power, such as in the event of a peak power situation. You will also work collaboratively with members of your work group and cross-functionally with all other departments.

Requirements

  • Graduate of Electrical Engineering Technologist or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical prints and drawings.
  • Thorough knowledge of High Voltage Power Distribution and Generating Systems.
  • Proficiency with SCADA and DCS equipment.
  • Working knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to react quickly and competently to changing operating conditions and arrive at solutions to overcome barriers in designing and implementing new and improved systems.
  • Innovation/creativity on an ongoing basis to assist in modifying or restructuring operating procedures or to develop more effective methods or techniques.
  • Ability to perform the work assigned with minimal supervision, with only unusual problems being referred to the supervisor.
