About The Position

CAD Railway Industries is an ambitious Quebec-based company that has been in operation for over 60 years. We specialize in the repair, conversion, and refurbishment of rolling railway equipment (various types of wagons and locomotives) with workshops and offices in Montreal (Lachine area) and Alberta (under the Caltrax banner). Over the years, our mission has evolved to become a responsible company focused on repairing and extending the lifespan of equipment entrusted to us by our clients. In many cases, we modernize these assets, essentially giving them a second life. Our teams design equipment that meets the needs of both freight and passenger clients. As a Power Systems Operator, you will be responsible for ensuring that all tank cars are prepared in a safe manner before entering the shop and prior to any hot work. This includes steaming, cleaning, scraping, torching, disassembly, and reassembly. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, good communication skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team in a safety sensitive environment.

  • Completion of all Caltrax Railcar Cleaning/Valve Technician training guidelines
  • Level two NDT certificates (Visual, BLT)
  • Knowledge of boiler, flare, and the tank car cleaning process

Responsibilities

  • Perform railcar cleaning, purging, and flaring in accordance with Caltrax and customer-specific procedures to prepare tank cars for safe entry and hot work
  • Adhere strictly to company safety protocols, including the proper use of PPE (e.g., SDS preparation and review, respirators, protective suits, and multi-gas detectors)
  • Operate tools and equipment safely and efficiently, including torque wrenches, cranes, power tools, and high-pressure steam/water hoses
  • Safely remove and store residual railcar commodities; prepare containers for appropriate disposal or recycling
  • Remove and reinstall service equipment (e.g., valves) as required
  • Complete rebuild activities including surface preparation, valve installation, gasket fitting, torque to specification, leak testing, and nitrogen padding
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams regarding car status, scheduling, parts, and completion timelines
  • Accurately document flaring operations including duration, temperature range, commodity type, and railcar identification
  • Maintain detailed records of critical tasks such as torque readings, photographic documentation, and work order updates; notify supervision of additional resource requirements
  • Perform daily inspections and minor maintenance of tools and equipment to ensure operational readiness
  • Conduct daily hazard assessments, proactively address and mitigate potential safety issues
  • Any other related tasks
