Power Systems Engineer II

JPL/NASA•Pasadena, CA
•$118,872 - $143,000•Onsite

About The Position

JPL seeks a Power Systems Engineer II to support end-to-end power subsystem solutions, including delivery of power hardware and operations. The role is part of the Power Systems Engineering group within the Avionics, Power, & Instrument Electronics Section, which designs, analyzes, fabricates, tests, verifies, and operates electronics, electrical ground support equipment, and power flight systems for JPL missions. The engineer will contribute across all phases of the mission life cycle, from technical concept development and hardware implementation through delivery and operations. The role requires integrating technical and program-related considerations to ensure systems satisfy project and mission requirements, and supporting the development of power systems and technologies for JPL missions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical subject area with at least 3 years of related work experience; or a master’s degree in a similar discipline with at least 1 year of related experience; or a PhD in a similar discipline with no required related work experience.
  • Recently demonstrated experience defining and delivering hardware.
  • Extensive knowledge of observables in electronic control systems and data acquisition systems.
  • Extensive understanding of one or more of: analog electronics, controls, power systems design, systems engineering, electrical systems engineering, reliability engineering, or integration and test.
  • Extensive understanding of power systems engineering principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Experience in power electronics design, including schematics, reliability analysis, board layout, and testing.
  • Experience delivering flight hardware and supporting ATLO and in-flight operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of grounding, EMI/EMC, harness design, electrical compatibility, signal integrity, safety and inhibit architectures, battery management, pyros and propulsion drivers, and multi-stage vehicles.
  • Knowledge of developing, testing, integrating, and using solar arrays and batteries for space applications.
  • Extensive experience with standard electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and logic analyzers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems to determine root cause.
  • Experience with power converter topologies, power switching, and closed-loop power control systems implemented using microcontrollers and/or FPGAs.
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
