About The Position

WSP is seeking a technically strong Power System Engineer to contribute to modeling, analysis, and optimization of renewable energy generation, battery storage, hybrid energy systems, microgrids, utility-scale renewable energy systems, and data centers. The role emphasizes technical modeling, simulation, and coding. The primary location is Houston, Texas; Austin, Dallas, Denver, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Milwaukee are also listed as locations for remote work. Candidates with greater experience may be considered for a senior-level position. The engineer will develop and validate system models, conduct power system and reliability studies, evaluate grid-connected and islanded infrastructure, and perform optimization and techno-economic analyses. The role also involves cross-disciplinary collaboration, technical reporting and presentations, and support for white papers and strategic energy-system planning. Project work may require schedules beyond a typical workweek and occasional travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in power systems and control.
  • At least 5 years of experience with power systems, control, renewable energy integration, data center microgrids, BESS systems, power flow analysis, power quality, and grid-tied inverter systems.
  • Engineer in Training certification.
  • Experience performing power-flow studies and dynamic and transient stability analysis using system-modeling tools such as PSSE and PSCAD.
  • Experience performing reliability studies, including FMEA, RAM, and root cause analysis.
  • Proficiency in Python for programming, optimization, and automation scripts.
  • Experience with system-level dispatch modeling and optimization studies for ISOs such as ERCOT, CAISO, and PJM.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of upholding workplace safety and ability to comply with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • MSc. or PhD. in Electrical Engineering, specializing in power systems and control.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • Experience with automation, optimization problems, and AI/ML applications in the power and energy systems domain.
  • Record of technical publications or presentations in the power and energy systems domain.
  • Familiarity with data center electrical architecture, UPS systems, and energy backup strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate simulation and optimization models for solar PV, wind, battery storage, hybrid microgrids, and data centers.
  • Perform steady-state, dynamic, and transient stability assessment studies.
  • Conduct system-level reliability analyses, including FMEA, RAM, and root cause analysis, to de-risk energy-system operations.
  • Perform simulations, optimization, sensitivity analyses, and techno-economic evaluations of renewable and mission-critical power systems.
  • Evaluate energy infrastructure integration in grid-connected and islanded modes.
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, and other cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Communicate technical results through documentation, reports, and stakeholder presentations.
  • Support white papers and strategic energy-system operation and planning efforts.
  • Make responsible and ethical decisions regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and follow WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
