Student Internship - Power Market Simulation Intern
About The Position
ISO New England is seeking a Power Market Simulation Intern to support the systems that ensure electricity reliability for millions across New England. This internship offers hands-on experience working with economists, engineers, data scientists, and market experts to transform complex market data into meaningful insights, prototype tools, and contribute to the future of wholesale electricity markets. The Market Development department designs and enhances the rules for competitive and efficient energy, capacity, and ancillary services markets in New England. This involves evaluating market changes, analyzing performance, and developing data-driven improvements, making it an ideal environment for students to apply quantitative skills to energy challenges.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a master’s degree in statistics, data science, computer science, economics, engineering, mathematics, operations research, or another relevant quantitative field.
- Strong coding skills, with Python required.
- Working knowledge of SQL for querying, transforming, and analyzing large datasets.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including comfort working with structured data, identifying patterns, and translating questions into analytical approaches.
- Familiarity with quantitative concepts such as regression, statistics, hypothesis testing, or related analytical methods.
- Ability to communicate findings clearly through writing, visuals, and presentations.
- Must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program.
- Must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
Nice To Haves
- Preferred experience with R or SAS.
- Preferred experience with Git or other version control tools.
Responsibilities
- Developing prototypes, pilot tools, or proof-of-concept solutions to improve analysis workflows.
- Creating dashboard concepts, exploratory visualizations, and analytical outputs for simulation and market results.
- Supporting coding, data preparation, and analysis for market design or simulation studies.
- Transforming complex datasets into usable insights for internal decision-making.
- Contributing to tools and workflows that may later be further developed in collaboration with IT or other business areas.
- Accelerating analytical efforts connected to integrated market simulation and multi-interval dispatch initiatives.
- Increasing capacity for experimentation, process improvement, and faster insight generation.
- Developing early-stage prototypes and proof-of-concept tools more quickly.
- Creating pilot dashboards or exploratory visual products that improve how results are reviewed and communicated.
- Supporting senior economists and analysts with data preparation, coding, and structural analysis.
- Expanding the department’s ability to test ideas, streamline workflows, and improve analytical processes.
