About The Position

Reporting to the Supervisor Field Operations, the Journeyman Power Line Technician is responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric distribution system.

Requirements

  • A journeyman power line technician certificate is required.
  • A valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license with an air brake endorsement is required.
  • Proven ability to both lead and work within a team environment; this includes leading by example in promoting and applying safe work practices.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal customers and team members; this includes good communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team or independently as an individual contributor.
  • Good organizational and time management skills, able to manage numerous projects and competing demands.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, Outlook, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Additional trade certifications, certificates, diplomas, or degrees in a related discipline would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely in accordance with safety practice regulations and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe worksite; this includes completing a hazard assessment and site work plan, correcting any unsafe conditions, reporting incidents, and supporting incident investigations.
  • Construct, maintain, repair, or troubleshoot the electric distribution system (both overhead and underground).
  • Perform live line work.
  • Draft switching plans and perform radial, system and substation switching.
  • Draft and obtain hold offs.
  • Perform distribution operations, distribution construction, distribution maintenance, patrols/repairs, and trouble restoration.
  • Construction Readiness – including but not limited to placing first calls, Pre-Planned Power Outages (PPOs), booking third party contractors, backhoe, hydrovac, unit contractors etc. and the completion of a construction readiness checklist, when required.
  • Distribution Operations – prioritizing and executing operations workload including but not limited to Service Investigation Orders (SIOs), trouble calls, pre route planning and escorting over dimensional loads,
  • Alternate Designate – Cable Fault Locating, Cable ID, Line Apparatus, System Switching, Very Low Frequency (VLF) Testing, Advanced Live Line, Construction.
  • Provide quick and courteous customer service for trouble calls or power interruptions.
  • Mentor apprentices and other team members.
  • Participation in a standby rotation is required.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.
