About The Position

This is a journey-level, ESC-represented exempt Project Engineer position focused on structural work in Power Generation. The role provides engineering and design, project management, and technical support to operations and maintenance staff for moderately complex issues and multiple medium- to large-scale capital and expense improvements to power generation and infrastructure facilities. The engineer applies sound engineering and project management principles, exercises independent judgment, and works with minimal supervision. The position manages multiple moderately complex projects and issues, while supporting more experienced engineers and project managers on larger or more complex work. Work includes directing project-related activities and contract administration with contractors and vendors, coordinating with internal Power Generation personnel and PG&E service organizations, and providing information and obtaining approvals from regulatory agencies. Duties vary by assignment. The engineer leads design and/or project management for moderately complex generation projects; provides technical support to O&M, including incident investigations and corrective actions; and controls scope, schedule, cost, and quality through the project life cycle. The role performs or reviews engineering analyses, scopes, alternatives, conceptual designs, and recommendations; solicits, prepares, and evaluates contracts and proposals; directs project work; applies applicable codes; and approves and stamps technical reports, specifications, and drawings. It also represents PG&E, identifies process gaps, and recommends improvements. The position requires a four-year engineering degree and a current professional engineering license. A license from another state or Canada may qualify initially, provided a California PE license is obtained within 18 months of hire. Candidates must have mastery of Associate-level Project Engineer duties and at least three years of cumulative experience in project engineering, design, and construction. The posted California salary range is $120,888 to $188,840.

Requirements

  • Four-year BS degree in Engineering from an accredited U.S. curriculum or equivalent from outside the U.S.
  • Current California Professional Engineer license in the appropriate discipline; alternatively, a current PE license in another state or Canada, with the requirement to obtain a California PE license within 18 months of hire. Failure to obtain the California license within that period results in demotion to the Associate level.
  • Mastery of Associate-level Project Engineer duties and demonstrated leadership, knowledge, and ability to perform Journey-level Project Engineer duties.
  • At least three years of cumulative experience in project engineering, design, and construction.
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently, depending on scope and complexity.
  • Ability to stamp and/or certify engineering drawings and documents.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering and project management concepts, principles, practices, and design requirements for generation assets.
  • Ability to develop moderately complex design changes, project scopes, and project implementation plans, and provide in-depth investigation and analysis support to O&M.
  • Working knowledge of the power generation industry, including the design, construction, and/or operation of rotating machines, and ability to interpret applicable codes, standards, regulations, and practices.
  • Ability to exercise informed technical and business judgment and recommend cost-effective, practical solutions.
  • Ability to function as a journey-level project manager on moderately scoped projects and/or support more experienced project managers on larger or more complex projects.
  • Ability to build consensus on moderately complex and controversial project issues and persuade others to act on agreements reached.
  • Ability to provide technical direction and guidance to less experienced engineers, project managers, drafters, and analysts, and provide training as needed.
  • Ability to independently provide technical or project oversight and direction to consultants, suppliers, and construction firms; manage moderately complex contracts; and negotiate and resolve contract disputes.
  • Track record of taking ownership of problems and solutions and recommending process improvements.
  • Track record of working with senior engineers and project managers to advance professional development, and of proactively developing engineering and project management skills and knowledge.

Nice To Haves

  • Project Management Institute Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering; advanced structural engineering coursework or a graduate degree in structural engineering is preferred.
  • California Civil Engineer PE with demonstrated competency in structural engineering; California Structural Engineer (SE) license is preferred.
  • Experience evaluating, designing, rehabilitating, or modifying structural systems for power generation and hydroelectric facilities, including powerhouses, dams and appurtenant structures, spillways, intake and outlet structures, equipment foundations, buildings, bridges, retaining structures, and water conveyance facilities.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design for reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, and foundations, including seismic evaluation, condition assessment, constructability review, and repair or retrofit design for existing facilities.
  • Familiarity with structural and seismic codes, standards such as ACI, ASCE, and AISC, and industry practices for generation infrastructure; experience preparing or reviewing calculations, design criteria, drawings, specifications, technical reports, and construction submittals.
  • Familiarity with FERC and California Division of Safety of Dams requirements, reviews, submittals, construction authorization, inspection coordination, and closeout for regulated hydroelectric and dam-safety projects.
  • Experience coordinating with dam safety and geotechnical engineers, cross-functional engineers, O&M personnel, construction teams, consultants, and regulatory stakeholders on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience with finite element analysis, including developing and modifying models, evaluating inputs and assumptions, and interpreting results.
  • Track record of building consensus and shaping others’ opinions through technical and business knowledge.
  • Experience providing technical oversight and direction to consultants, suppliers, and construction firms and managing contract issues.
  • Proactive professional development through industry associations, conferences, technical workshops, trade publications, and formal education.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and/or project management efforts for moderately complex generation projects, including discipline-specific, multidisciplinary, or programmatic projects.
  • Provide broad and in-depth technical support to operations and maintenance staff, including incident investigation and development of corrective actions.
  • Proactively manage project scope, schedule, cost, and design and project quality throughout the project life cycle, coordinating internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform or review engineering analyses and studies, detailed scopes, viable alternatives, conceptual designs, and recommended fixes to support safe and reliable generation assets.
  • Work with supervisors and project managers to solicit, prepare, and evaluate contracts and proposals, including EPC proposals from consultants, vendors, and construction firms; direct resulting work.
  • Review consultant contracts for technical compliance and interpret and apply applicable codes.
  • Approve and stamp technical reports, specifications, new drawings, and revisions to existing drawings for projects.
  • Represent PG&E to internal and external organizations as required.
  • Identify gaps between current business practices and objectives and recommend process improvements.
  • Perform other duties related to engineering and project management as assigned.
