Power Generation Engineer

Giga EnergyLong Beach, CA
Onsite

About The Position

As a Power Generation Engineer at Giga, you own the engineering, reliability, and performance of the generation assets that keep our sites alive. You'll design systems, diagnose failures, lead commissioning, and work directly with Operations to ensure our facilities never go dark. In a company where uptime is everything, you are part of the last line of defense — and we need you to be the kind of engineer who takes that seriously. You'll work with autonomy in a fast-moving environment, manage vendors and contractors, and build robust generation infrastructure from the ground up.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in power generation, utility, or industrial power systems engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Deep hands-on knowledge of generator controls, paralleling switchgear, automatic transfer systems, and HV/MV electrical systems (up to 34.5 kV).
  • Proficiency in power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to own generation assets through their full lifecycle — from design and commissioning to long-term O&M.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex generation issues under time pressure.
  • Clear communicator who can work across Engineering, Operations, and external stakeholders without losing technical accuracy.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with microgrids, combined heat and power (CHP), or behind-the-meter generation systems.
  • Familiarity with renewable integration including solar, BESS, or wind in a generation stack.
  • Background in data center, crypto mining, or other high-demand, always-on power environments.
  • Project management experience on EPC or capital projects with generation scope.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design, specification, and engineering of power generation systems — including gas turbines, diesel generators, and hybrid configurations — from concept through commissioning.
  • Serve as the technical authority for generation assets on site: monitor performance, investigate anomalies, and drive corrective action before issues become outages.
  • Develop and own electrical design packages: single-line diagrams, load flow studies, short-circuit analyses, and protection coordination.
  • Build and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs; track reliability metrics (availability, MTBF, MTTR) and use data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead commissioning activities including SAT, FAT, and integrated system testing for new generation assets.
  • Develop and implement SCADA and control system strategies for real-time generation monitoring and management.
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships through procurement, installation, and ongoing O&M; hold them accountable to Giga's standards.
  • Coordinate with utilities and grid operators on interconnection requirements, capacity reservations, and compliance obligations.
  • Ensure all generation activities comply with applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, NERC) and champion electrical safety across the team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system efficiency, reduce fuel costs, and increase generation reliability; build the case and drive implementation.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, reviewed annually against market.
  • Performance-based bonus tied to site and company outcomes.
  • Full health, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Generous PTO and flexibility for the times when you need to recharge.
  • Professional development budget — including support for PE licensure and continuing education.
  • The opportunity to build generation infrastructure at a scale and speed that doesn't exist anywhere else.
