Power Electronics Engineer III

Blue OriginHuntsville, WA

About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Blue National Security business unit, focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit. As a power electronics engineer supporting the TeraWave propulsion team, you will play a key foundational role in the development of the Hall thruster-based propulsion systems that maneuver the TeraWave constellation satellites, as well as support the propulsion team itself. TeraWave is a satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations. Overview: Blue Origin is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Power Electronics Engineer (Level 3) to join our team in developing advanced power electronic converters for aerospace and space applications. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record designing DC-DC converters, both with and without galvanic isolation, control algorithms, and will be responsible for all phases of product development, from requirements capture through production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing power electronics for aerospace or space applications (DC-DC converters essential).
  • Proficiency in requirements/specifics capture and translation for high-reliability systems.
  • Experienced in selecting power-stage topologies and control schemes, including both isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters.
  • Hands-on experience with components selection for demanding environments.
  • Strong skills in controller algorithm design and implementation.
  • Proficient in circuit simulation tools (e.g., LTspice, PSpice, SIMetrix) for feasibility and verification. Including transient analysis, in-rush analysis, stress analysis and stability analysis.
  • Experience in schematic capture (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD) and PCB layout/routing for high-reliability electronics.
  • Experience with Si, GaN and SiC devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to bring-up boards, troubleshoot, and validate performance through testing.
  • Experience iterating designs for manufacturability and reliability in a production environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Familiarity with space qualification standards (e.g., MIL-STD, NASA standards).
  • Experience with High Voltage aerospace design.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of embedded firmware for power converters.

Responsibilities

  • Capture and translate engineering requirements and customer specifications for power electronic systems for space applications.
  • Perform conceptual design, including selection of power-stage topology and control schemes suitable for challenging aerospace environments.
  • Execute detailed design, selecting reliable and space-qualified components to meet demanding performance and environmental criteria.
  • Develop and implement controller algorithms to optimize converter performance and efficiency.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and verify designs through detailed circuit simulation and analysis.
  • Produce accurate and clear schematic drawings for power electronic circuits.
  • Design PCB layouts and perform routing to meet space application standards, including reliability and manufacturability.
  • Lead board bring-up, troubleshooting, and functional testing of prototypes and production units.
  • Perform iterative design improvements based on test data and feedback, ensuring readiness for production.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including firmware, mechanical, and systems engineering, to ensure cohesive product development.
  • Support documentation, design reviews, and production transition activities.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
  • Stock Options for all regular employees (working at least 20 hours/week)
