About The Position

Kimley-Horn's Portland, OR office is seeking a Substation Electrical Engineer to support a wide range of high‑voltage substation projects for developers, EPCs, and utilities. Projects span multiple clients and delivery models, requiring adaptability, strong engineering judgment, and comfort working across varied scopes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • 6+ years of substation electrical engineering experience
  • Prior experience in an Electrical Engineering role focused on utility-scale substation design
  • Understanding of the National Electrical Code (NFPA70), National Electrical Safety Code, IEEE and ANSI Standards
  • Interest and experience engaging directly with clients, having a growth mindset to build business
  • Willingness to travel to support site visits and client meetings, as needed

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and analysis of complex electrical systems for utility-scale substations
  • Develop design documents and reports, including electrical layouts, schematics, one-line/three-line diagrams, etc.
  • Provide electrical design and installation support (RFI, submittal, transmittal, etc.) to project staff, EPC contractor, and EPC project management team
  • Daily interaction and collaboration on multi-disciplinary teams, with interaction across Kimley-Horn offices
  • Mid-level and senior staff are expected to prepare project specifications, electrical cost estimates, and proposals, supporting the growth of electrical engineering service areas in the Minneapolis market and across the country
  • Mid-level and senior staff are expected to lead project teams to produce high quality deliverables
  • Mid-level and senior staff are expected to assist in mentoring, training, and growing a team to expand our electrical engineering practice
