About The Position

The Inflammation Biology group is seeking a passionate and driven postdoctoral scientist to pursue innovative research at the forefront of chronic fibrotic liver disease. This role offers a unique opportunity to explore the complex biology of conditions such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The successful candidate will spearhead an independent research project focused on uncovering novel pathogenic mechanisms and identifying therapeutic targets in chronic fibrotic diseases. This work is expected to yield impactful insights into the pathogenesis of human disease and high-impact publications in leading scientific journals. This is a three-year postdoctoral training position at Gilead. The role is embedded in a highly collaborative and resource-rich environment, offering access to world-class facilities and cross-functional expertise across Gilead’s research ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology or related discipline.
  • At least one first author paper published or accepted in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Proficiency in mammalian cell biology and biochemistry techniques.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and strong organizational skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Broad hands-on expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and imaging techniques including in vitro cell-based functional assays, primary cell cultures, transfection/transduction techniques, CRISPR/Cas9, microscopy, flow cytometry, and other immunoassays.
  • Hands-on experience with mouse models of disease, mouse handling, in-life procedures and tissue harvesting are preferred.
  • Familiarity with the analysis of large-scale multiomic datasets, such as single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, is preferred.
  • Experience developing complex primary cell co-culture systems is an advantage.
  • Demonstrable skills and experience in leading focused hypothesis-driven biological research, as exemplified by quality publications.
  • Demonstrated success in working in a cross-functional and highly collaborative team environment, and must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Lead independent research projects to investigate pathogenic mechanisms in chronic fibrotic liver disease
  • Utilize Gilead’s expensive single cell and spatial transcriptomic datasets as well as clinical datasets to uncover novel mechanisms driving fibrotic niche expansion
  • Use a combination of mouse genetic and pharmacology approaches to investigate key disease drivers and establish novel ex vivo models allowing for target identification and screening
  • With the support of a mentor, design, conduct, and analyze in vitro and in vivo experiments to drive research towards publication in a top-tier journal
  • Publish their work in top-tier journals and present at scientific conferences
