About The Position

The Men’s Health Research (MHR) program in the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus invites applications from highly qualified and motivated candidates for a part-time (0.5 FTE) Postdoctoral Fellow position. Founded in 2003, the MHR program is led by Dr. John Oliffe, Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Men’s Health Promotion at UBC School of Nursing. The MHR program conducts gendered analyses, and designs, implements and evaluates gender-responsive men’s suicide prevention and mental health promotion programs across 3 interconnected themes: addressing men’s mental health inequities; guiding the practices of men to seek, and practitioners who provide, mental health care; and assisting men to build equitable intimate partner relationships and social connections. We seek applicants with a strong track record in research coordination and academic publication, and a deep commitment to pursuing an academic career in interdisciplinary and collaborative men’s mental health research.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree, completed within the last five years, in health sciences, social sciences or other related fields
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative research design and coordination
  • Demonstrated experience in men’s health research and/or gender analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in academic publishing
  • Demonstrated experience independently leading research projects
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse stakeholders
  • Eligibility to work in Canada

Responsibilities

  • Lead ethics application for the sequential photovoice study to UBC Behavioural Research Ethics Board
  • Working with the research collaborators (i.e., Family Caregivers of British Columbia, Office of the Seniors Advocate British Columbia, and Independent Long-Term Care Councils Association of British Columbia), lead the recruitment of and individual photovoice interviews with 50 eligible participants
  • Lead the preparation for Zoom focus group polls, including checking photograph consent, reviewing and categorizing participant-submitted photographs, selecting representative thematic photographs for the polls
  • Work with an independent Zoom facilitator to conduct Zoom focus group polls
  • Lead the virtual photo exhibition, including the private launch event with research participants
  • Coordinate with Family Caregivers of British Columbia to develop, pilot-test and implement the facilitated peer support group program for older, male spousal caregivers
  • Lead and participate in data analysis
  • Lead and participate in peer-reviewed academic publications
  • Participate in competitive collaborative research grant applications
  • Coordinate KM activities, including hosting in-person photo exhibition, drafting concise reports and policy briefs, developing in-person and virtual awareness campaigns, and disseminating research findings through academic conferences, seminars and public outreach events
  • Coordinate and lead meetings with the research team and collaborators
  • Mentor graduate students and research assistants
  • In addition to contributing to collaborative research and KM, the Postdoctoral Fellow will have the opportunity to engage with other MHR-led research projects and develop their own independent research agenda.
