Under the direction/guidance of a mentor (principal investigator), assumes responsibility for a specific, on-going research project. The experience will serve to extend, refine and enhance skills necessary for professional and career development, and will enable the individual to broaden his/her scientific background by acquiring new research capabilities. It is expected that this individual will conduct independent scholarly research, and will contribute directly to the overall research goals of the project and the research group. This role will be expected to participate in project planning, recording and interpretation/evaluation of data, and communication of results. This position will also be expected to acquire technical, lab management, and manuscript/grant writing skills; and participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentations at national meetings. This role also may be required to supervise junior lab members, develop new methods and protocols for research, and assist with the development of other research projects in the lab. The Kurre Lab investigates the biology underlying genetic disorders of hematopoiesis, aiming for mechanistic insight that can lead to new therapies. Here, we will tap into recent advances in genome engineering and non viral gene delivery to develop cutting edge stem cell gene therapy for hematologic disease. As part of a newly NIH funded multi-investigator project, the work is deeply aligned with institutional efforts to advance gene therapy, leveraging a wide array of available resources. Under the direction/guidance of a mentor (principal investigator), we will develop and preclinically validate a new editing technique. The successful candidate will have direct experience in molecular biology and genome editing techniques. Strong preference is given to those with fluency in multiparameter flow cytometry as well as animal husbandry skills. Embedded in a team effort with co-investigating labs, the position offers extensive opportunity to network and expand the experimental skills. As a platform for career development, the candidate will have access to extensive catalog of seminars and educational offering at CHOP and Penn. The experience will serve to extend the candidate’s scientific background by acquiring new research capabilities but also through successfully navigating grantsmanship, publication and scientific presentation. This role will participate in project planning, recording and interpretation/evaluation of data, and communication of results. The position provides opportunity to acquire leadership-, lab management- and manuscript/grant writing skills. Career development is further fostered through supervision of junior lab members and participation in other research projects in the lab.
