About The Position

The Department of Marine Science is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on projects related to quantifying micro- and nanoplastics in environmental and biological samples and understanding the environmental processes that degrade plastics photochemically or biologically. The Fellow will also have opportunities to work on projects related to natural organic matter in the environment, depending on their research interests. The Liu Lab houses a suite of advanced analytical instrumentation, including GC/MS, LC/MS, Py-GC/MS, and O-PTIR and SEM, etc. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of extension based on funding and performance. The position is primarily located in Port Aransas, Texas, but travel to Austin several times a year may be needed.

Requirements

  • Must have received their PhD or completed all qualifications and degree requirements within three years prior to the effective date of their initial assignment.

  • Broad expertise in environmental chemistry in aquatic environments
  • Experience in plastic aging in the environment
  • Experience in using advanced analytical tools, such as gas/liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, and analytical pyrolysis etc.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on plastic weathering
  • Develop analytical protocols for plastic analysis
  • Mentor other lab members, including graduate and undergraduate students
  • Prepare data for publication
  • Present research results to national and international conferences
