About The Position

A postdoctoral research fellow position is available in the Neural functional lab within the Complex in Vitro Systems’ Neuroscience group at Genentech. Our laboratory is dedicated to developing next generation complex in vitro models of the healthy and degenerative central nervous system to generate new insights into disease biology and emerging therapies. We have a particular interest in understanding and perturbing microglial contributions to neurodegeneration using high-throughput screening state-of-the-art omics techniques. The Opportunity: To lead an independent, end-to-end translational research program developing an multicellular in vitro model of the brain and resident immune cells in a neurodegenerative (Alzheimer’s) disease state, and investigating the phenotypic responses to changes in therapeutic or pathologic gene perturbation in separate cellular compartments. To leverage state-of-the-art omics techniques and develop screening methods for complex in vitro models. To collaborate widely and cross-functionally with colleagues at Genentech, including molecule development teams, Neuroscience Research, and Development Sciences. To participate in Genentech’s postdoctoral training program, which offers outstanding training and mentorship, opportunities to present work internally and externally, career development support, and exposure to an environment focused on drug development and breakthrough discoveries.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Bioengineering, Systems Biology or related with a proven track record of high impact research accomplishments.
  • Advanced at least one project as evidenced by a first author paper published or accepted in a leading peer-reviewed journal.
  • Highly independent and driven scientist who enjoys working at the bench and the computer.
  • Strong passion for scientific research.
  • Knowledge and experience in modeling of human neurodegenerative disease, e.g. Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Ability to learn, adapt, and apply computational tools as part of an experimental research program.
  • Value careful experimental design, quantitative rigor, and clear biological interpretation.
  • Communicate effectively and thrive in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in developing neurodegenerative disease models in complex in vitro systems (organoids, spheroids, organ-on-chip, etc) is highly desirable.
  • Experience in generating and deploying high-throughput methods for drug and genetic screening is highly desirable.
  • Experience with generating and analyzing single-cell transcriptomic or multi-omic data (e.g., scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, proteomics) is preferred.
