About The Position

Professor Rachel Austin is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the Bioinorganic Chemistry Laboratory at Barnard College, a premier liberal arts college in Manhattan affiliated with Columbia University. Working collaboratively with Dr. Austin as Principal Investigator (PI), the postdoctoral fellow’s primary responsibilities are to design and carry out experiments to express and purify proteins, characterize them, and test their reactivity with a variety of substrates, some of which may need to be synthesized. There may be some supervision of undergraduate research students. This is a grant-funded position for one year with the possibility of renewal.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry
  • Experience with organic synthesis
  • Excellent data and materials management and note-booking skills
  • Creative problem-solving abilities with a focus on achieving goals
  • Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement methods to maximize the expression and activity of integral membrane metalloenzymes and associated proteins.
  • Carry out activity assays using a GC-MS.
  • Measure metal concentration using an ICP-MS.
  • Characterize proteins using a range of spectroscopic techniques.
  • Synthesize organic substrates as needed.
  • Shephard a new research direction into the role of the metalloenzyme AlkB in catalyzing the oxidation of long-chain alkanes.
