About The Position

The Makino Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate at the Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology in Jupiter, Florida. The area of our research focuses on coronary microvascular dysfunction in diabetes and menopause, particularly in cell-cell communication, mitochondrial function, cell apoptosis/senescence, and calcium handling in the endoplasmic reticulum of endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Requirements

  • Ph.D. and/or MD in an appropriate scientific discipline required.
  • A successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences, M.D., or equivalent degree.
  • A strong record of productivity in cardiovascular physiology (e.g., assessment of cardiac function using echocardiogram and/or catheterization in mice.
  • Isometric tension measurement in mouse small vessels, or electrophysiological experiments using endothelial and smooth muscle cells isolated from mouse hearts and lungs) is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Theoretical and working knowledge in advanced cardiovascular physiology.
  • Demonstrated ability to dissect small arteries [coronary and pulmonary artery] for isometric tension experiments.
  • Evaluate cardiac and vascular function using the Millar system or echocardiogram in mice, and isolate heart and lung vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells.
  • Aseptic techniques for cell culture is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in Western Blot, immunoprecipitation, PCR, qPCR, and FACS.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to experimental design, analysis, interpretation of the results, and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with writing scientific manuscripts and contributing to teamwork in physiological and molecular biological experiments.
  • Demonstrated practical time management skills to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with animals and human tissues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the following specialized programs: SnapGene, GraphPad, EndNote, and MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting cardiovascular physiological and molecular biological experiments using dissected vessels from mouse and vascular cells freshly isolated from the tissue.
  • Analyzing research data using different computer software
  • Generation of preliminary data for grant applications.
  • Writing drafts of manuscripts.
  • Coordinating with other investigators for lab research.
  • Maintaining the function of lab equipment, and managing the lab research record (including methodological approaches and animal protocols).
