About The Position

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct NIH-funded research in the Aboudehen Laboratory within the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Department of Medicine. The laboratory studies RNA biology in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) through two major research programs: (1) determining how disease-associated long noncoding RNAs regulate cyst initiation and progression, and (2) defining how RNA-binding proteins, RNA–RNA interactions, and other post-transcriptional mechanisms regulate PKD1 mRNA and polycystin-1 dosage. The lab uses complementary approaches in RNA biology, molecular and cellular biology, mouse genetics, and kidney-disease modeling to investigate ADPKD mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets. Research may involve genetically engineered mouse models of PKD, human kidney epithelial and primary ADPKD cells, and RNA-targeting technologies. The incumbent will conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, prepare manuscripts and presentations, and ensure that all research is performed according to Stony Brook University policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in RNA biology, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, biomedical sciences or closely related field in hand by the start of the appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Research experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: RNA biology and post-transcriptional gene regulation; kidney biology or polycystic kidney disease; mouse genetics, transgenic mouse models, and animal phenotyping; mammalian cell culture, primary cells, or kidney organoids; or RNA-targeting technologies such as siRNA and antisense oligonucleotides.
  • Experience with eCLIP, iCLIP, CLIP-seq, or related RNA–protein interaction assays is highly desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct molecular, cellular, and animal experiments investigating lncRNA function, PKD1 mRNA regulation, polycystin-1 biology, and ADPKD pathogenesis. Studies may include genetically engineered mouse models, kidney phenotyping, mammalian cell culture, and primary ADPKD cells.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and document experimental data; perform literature searches; and apply specialized approaches in RNA biology, molecular biology, mouse genetics, and kidney-disease research.
  • Prepare manuscripts, scientific presentations, research reports, and grant-related materials.
  • Maintain mouse-colony and experimental records, laboratory materials, and equipment, and assist with ordering research supplies as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including attending scientific conferences, seminars, and meetings.
