About The Position

The C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) at Stony Brook University is seeking to fill one or more postdoctoral research appointments in theoretical physics, with an approximate start date of September 1, 2027. These are two-year appointments, renewable for a third year, contingent upon funding availability. Research areas include, but are not limited to, topological phases of matter and their realizations on quantum devices, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computation, non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, and generalized symmetries. The role involves conducting research, collaborating with institute members and other research institutes, potentially traveling for research purposes, and presenting seminars. The institute fosters collaboration with the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics, the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook, and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Senior Postdoctoral Associate role additionally includes mentorship of graduate students.

Requirements

  • Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in theoretical physics or a closely related field, with a record of independent research.
  • 3 + years of independent research experience (for Sr. Postdoctoral Associate).

Nice To Haves

  • Research experience in one or more of the following subfields: topological phases of matter and their realizations on quantum devices, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computation, non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, and generalized symmetries.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in the field of the Postdoctoral Associate's choice in topological phases of matter and their realizations on quantum devices, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computation, non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, and generalized symmetries.
  • Collaborate with senior members of the YITP working in the same field as well as in other educational institutes.
  • Present seminars based on the Postdoctoral Associate's work during the academic year.
  • Occasional travel to present research results or collaborate on institute-sponsored research.
  • Other duties as needed.
