About The Position

The Portfolio Manager Team Lead is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and subject-matter expertise in the structuring, underwriting, and ongoing management of Commercial & Industrial (C&I) credit relationships. This role requires deep expertise across a variety of credit products, including revolving lines of credit, and term loans, Asset Based Lending (ABL), Commercial Real Estate (CRE) loans, both non-owner and owner occupied, as well as consumer and personal real Estate lending. The Team Lead serves as a coach and mentor to Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts, fosters collaboration with Relationship Management teams, and plays a key role in ensuring sound credit quality, policy adherence, and portfolio risk management.

Requirements

  • Strong expertise with financial analysis, credit underwriting, spreading, tickler management, covenant testing, and modeling/projections, and portfolio management.
  • Effective and professional communication skills are a must. Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Professional-level proficiency in spreading software, MS Excel and MS Office.
  • Demonstrated experience with loan documentation, including documents prepared by outside counsel.
  • Ability to handle complex and sensitive client relationships.
  • Ability to sell value of a relationship over price. Capable of handling negotiations, including in the area of loan documentation.
  • Independent thinker and self-starter.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to build and sustain collaborative working relationships across teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field required
  • Seven to ten years of commercial lending experience, with strong emphasis on credit underwriting.
  • Broad knowledge and experience in banking operations, lending products, and financial services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, structure, and coaching to front line Portfolio Managers and Relationship Management teams.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and professional working environment across Relationship Managers and the Portfolio Managers teams.
  • Minimize potential Credit Approvals that could be potentially viewed as exception or underwritten under non-supported overtly liberal terms. Mitigate potential losses normally discovered during the underwriting process. Elevate concerns discovered during the underwriting process with the Relationship Manager and either the Credit Team Lead or appropriate Credit Administrator.
  • Minimize portfolio losses and criticized credits.
  • Support Regional Managers and Relationship Managers with existing, renewing, and new Credit Requests.
  • Provides training/coaching to Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts assigned.
  • Communicate constantly issues within the portfolio or potential issues on incoming requests.
  • Monitor portfolio for maturing credits and/or past due credits.
  • Perform regular reviews of credits within the portfolio as well as collateral. Recommend appropriate risk grading based upon performance and economic environment affecting the client/industry.
  • Assist Portfolio Management and Relationship Management Teams by being available to meet clients and prospects in the field (as applicable).
  • Encourage Portfolio Management Team to maintain tight contact with clients assigned by calling on personal portfolio’d clients no less than quarterly, and problem credits no less than monthly.
  • Assist in loan documentation and structure by working closely with the Note Department. Inspect Loan Documentation for errors or issues.
  • Management of a portfolio of commercial credit relationships. Through proactive client profiling deepens existing relationships by cross-selling.
  • Responsible for maintaining and monitoring relationships, credit analysis, and underwriting, as team workload requires.
  • Utilization of financial analysis and modeling to provide value-add input into clients' Management decisions.
  • Responsible for maintaining ticklers to ensure documentation and covenants are kept up to date.
  • Participate in weekly sales pipeline meetings to provide an overview of individual and market sales opportunities.
  • Responsible for keeping current on the bank’s lending policies, products, and services.
