About The Position

Join our collegial-spirited team at Burnaby Hospital as we build for the future of health care in Burnaby. The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030. Highlights of the two-phase redevelopment project include: Expanded Emergency Department with additional treatment spaces, New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine, and mental health patients, New operating rooms, procedure rooms and recovery spaces, New acute care tower with 160 beds, New medical imaging department, New integrated BC Cancer Centre. Burnaby Hospital plays an essential role to those living in the community by delivering a variety health care services. Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, and plastics specialties. Under the general supervision of the Manager Health Services, transports patients, bodies, and materials such as supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals between hospital areas.

Requirements

  • Grade 10 plus one year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Transports patients and accompanying documents and/or equipment such as IV poles, utilizing mechanical aids such as beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
  • Assists in lifting and transferring of patients to and from beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
  • Responds to patients' requests during transport.
  • Accompanies patients to the discharge area and assists/helps them into the vehicle as required.
  • Completes Porter Service request forms and responds to telephone and paging systems for requests for transportation of patients, stat specimens, and related equipment.
  • Provides messenger services to nursing units such as charts, z-ray films, specimens, pharmacy, as required.
  • Transfers bodies to Morgue and registers/records necessary paper work.
  • Transports clean supplies and materials to all areas of the facility and collects soiled supplies and equipment as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
