About The Position

Axiom Space is seeking an experienced PLSS Mechanical Engineer to support the development, maturation, and operation of spaceflight hardware for the Axiom Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Spacesuit. The engineer will develop and mature single-suit architecture designs for multiple mission environments, including microgravity and partial gravity, and own product delivery timelines from concept and design through fabrication, assembly, delivery, on-orbit demonstration, and on-orbit services. The role includes creating and applying spacesuit standards and practices; developing and reviewing engineering models, schematics, drawings, analyses, assessments, and procedures; and establishing a product lifecycle from supply chain through final integration. The engineer will validate designs through analysis or testing, lead reviews with internal teams and external suppliers and customers, support hardware manufacturing and assembly, communicate project status and issues, and implement agile project management methodologies. The position is generally based in an office environment, although work may occur indoors or outdoors depending on the task. Evening and weekend work may be needed to meet critical project milestones. Candidates must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation and provide proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of space environments, including grounding/bonding, thermal, vacuum, and regolith, and their effects on design decisions.
  • Experience defining and implementing engineering standards, processes, and practices.
  • Hands-on experience building, testing, and/or assembling hardware.
  • Track record of delivering outcomes in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Good judgment and proactive problem-solving that positively impacts difficult challenges.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  • Passion for space and the mission.
  • Entrepreneurial, growth mindset.
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate within teams and cross-functionally.
  • Ability to use systems and tools to work smarter and faster.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency is required.
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet critical project milestones.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with flight hardware development and certification.
  • Knowledge of NASA or commercial space program standards.

Responsibilities

  • Define and create modern spacesuit standards and practices.
  • Generate and/or review CAD models, engineering schematics, drawings, analyses, assessments, and procedures for components, assemblies, and suit assembly.
  • Establish an efficient product lifecycle from the supply chain through final integration, balancing cost, complexity, and quality.
  • Validate designs by analysis or test, building development articles as needed.
  • Lead design and production reviews internally and externally with suppliers and customers.
  • Support manufacturing and assembly of hardware in the facility and through on-orbit operation.
  • Communicate project progress, status, and potential issues to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Implement and maintain agile project management methodologies throughout the project lifecycle.
