About The Position

A Port Police Specialist is a sworn peace officer authorized to carry a firearm. This role involves enforcing federal and state laws and regulations, City of Los Angeles ordinances, and security, traffic, and safety rules. Responsibilities include uniformed foot, vehicle, boat, and bicycle patrol, as well as plainclothes assignments at the Port of Los Angeles. The specialist will make arrests, prepare written reports, provide public information, and engage in hazardous materials enforcement.

Requirements

  • Possess a current California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate at the time of application; or, have standing as an LAPD Line Reserve Officer with Certified Designated level 1 (CDL) status; or, a Basic Course Waiver issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
  • Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
  • Possess a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at the time of appointment.
  • DMV record must not reflect three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation within the last 36 months.
  • Must currently meet or be able to meet all standards set forth by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST).
  • Candidates must comply with all current Department grooming and appearance policies, including those related to tattoos and/or brandings.
  • Must attach a copy of their current California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate, proof of standing as an LAPD Line Reserve Officer with CDL status, or a copy of their Basic Course Waiver issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to their on-line application at the time of filing.
  • Must attach a copy of their current, official CA POST Profile to their on-line application at the time of filing for verification.

Nice To Haves

  • Individuals who possess a California POST certificate and patrol experience will attend a 12-week training program.
  • Individuals who possess a California POST certificate and no patrol experience will attend a 16-week training program.
  • Individuals with out-of-state experience as peace officers who were approved by California POST for equivalency will attend a 16-week training program.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces federal and state laws and regulations, City of Los Angeles ordinances, and security, traffic, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Engages in law enforcement activities, including uniformed foot, vehicle, boat, and bicycle patrol and plainclothes assignments at the Port of Los Angeles.
  • Makes arrests and prepares written reports.
  • Provides information to the public regarding locations and operations of the Department.
  • Engages in hazardous materials enforcement.
