About The Position

Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC) is currently accepting applications for a shore-based Inland Marine Port Mate. This position will be based in the Garyville/Mt. Airy, LA area and will report to an Inland Marine Port Captain. This position will be scheduled to Monday through Friday. The Port Mate is a critical member of vessel operations by serving as a key trainer for deck crew employees. The Port Mate will spend most of their time working directly with deck crew employees aboard vessels. Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism are critical to this position, and we are looking for individuals who can contribute to our inclusive work environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Four (4) or more years of vessel operations experience required, including experience as a Mate.
  • A valid USCG issued Tankerman’s license, including a valid USCG medical certificate is required.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
  • A Valid Drivers License is required.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in Company meetings, industry meetings, and developmental training programs as required.
  • Acts as communication liaison between vessel and shore-based personnel.
  • Assists with implementing new policies and procedures impacting deck crew employees.
  • Participates in Marine Structured Safety Process (including Safety and Security drills), Watch Change Protocol, and other environmental and safety programs impacting deck crew employees.
  • Reviews and audits boat and barge inspections, forms, and Company manuals, and reports any discrepancies and/or proposed changes to the appropriate department for handling.
  • Assists with succession planning for deck crew employees.
  • Monitors and tracks deck crew employee job performance and progression.
  • Communicates employee performance issues with leadership, as appropriate.
  • Conducts deck crew employee evaluations to ensure understanding/retention of information and skills received during training.
  • Provides deck crew employees with a variety of job-related training including training on safety equipment, CPR/First Aid, boat computer operations, inspection and forms completion, etc.
  • Provides deck crew employees with job skills training including how to correctly build tows, make locks, safe line handling, general housekeeping, and complete minor maintenance on boats and barges.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in developing curriculum and implementing training programs for deck crew employees (i.e. Deckhands and Mates).
