About The Position

Under close supervision, maintains the safety of the swimming pool/area through alert observation of swimmers, weather conditions, and the guarded area. Performs rescues and pre-hospital emergency medical procedures. This is a part-time position.

Requirements

  • Completion of valid Lifeguard training/certification, Lifeguard first aid/CPR or an equivalent level of training.
  • Must be able to swim 250 yards under 5 minutes.
  • Must be able to run ¼ mile under 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Knowledge of lifesaving practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of City codes, rules, regulations, and protocols pertaining to the area of responsibility (pool/park/facility).
  • Knowledge of public relations practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices applicable to working as a lifeguard.
  • Ability to safely operate assigned tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform all lifeguard duties including rescues, emergency pre-hospital care, first aid, surveillance, and public relations.
  • Ability to remain calm in emotionally stressful situations and to handle frightened or injured persons in the water.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and generate periodic reports.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain the physical standards prescribed by the City.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy or bulky items occasionally (80-100 lbs.) under difficult conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Observes swimmers, weather, and water conditions to maintain safety of the pool/area guarded.
  • Takes preventative actions to maintain safety of the pool/area by warning against dangerous practices and keeping weak swimmers out of dangerous situations.
  • Responds to water emergencies; rescues and assists patrons in the water, provides basic first aid and pre-hospital emergency care as necessary.
  • Participates in physical training and continuing education to maintain proficiency.
  • Educates patrons on facility rules and regulations and assists in enforcement actions.
  • Completes required reports.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and equipment.
  • Observes standard operating procedures and safety practices.
