About The Position

The Pool Captain, under the supervision of the Deputy Aquatics Administrator, is responsible for the mechanical operation of aquatic facilities, community pools, and fountains, as well as the planning and supervision of Aquatic Programs. This is a professional and supervisory position.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of all phases of aquatic facility operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all phases of community recreational activities and their administration.
  • Ability to promote, program and execute an activity in a broad phase of the program.
  • The ability to cooperate with public and private groups, to develop and maintain high staff morale and enthusiasm, to effectively communicate with others (verbally and written).
  • Good judgment and the ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Aquatics, Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Sports Management, Public Administration, or a related field AND two (2) years of progressively responsible aquatics experience, including at least one (1) year of supervisory or management experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Possession of a valid pool operator/aquatics facility operator certification required for the operation of assigned facilities.
  • Possession of current AFO, CPR, First Aid and AED certification, and applicable lifeguard/water safety instructor certification, as required by the position.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the daily operations of any aquatic facility.
  • Overseeing the safety of pool patrons. Performs water rescues and lifeguard functions in emergencies or when otherwise required.
  • Inspecting lifeguard pool safety such as oxygen supplements, AED units, first aid kits and other safety equipment to ensure proper working order.
  • Ensuring that the maintenance of the pools is of the highest standard in terms of cleanliness and safety. Ensures that the grounds, facilities and equipment are properly maintained through regular inspections.
  • Maintaining and operating pool drain and fill pumps, circulation pumps, chlorination and acid feeders. Oversees the application of chemicals to ensure the pool is disinfected, clean and maintained at the proper chemical levels as mandated by local, state and federal guidelines.
  • Ensuring that patrons are being helped by courteous and professional staff. Provides information to patrons regarding rules, fees and regulations.
  • Assisting in organizing and administering aquatic and recreational activities and programs. Assists in the planning of special events, swim lessons, spring and summer camps. Supervises after hour activities as required.
  • Overseeing filtration and chemical control systems, aquatic programming, lifeguard training and general recreational swimming activities to ensure proper lifesaving capabilities and safe facility operations.
  • Planning, coordinating, directing and evaluating existing recreational programs and activities of assigned facility and assists in implementing new programs and activities for various age groups and interest levels.
  • Planning, assigning, supervising and evaluating the work of full-time staff, part-time staff, volunteers and contracted vendors; prepares employee schedules and work assignments.
  • Assessing employee performance, prepares evaluations and recommends and develops training as needed.
  • Performing regular inspections of the assigned facility to ensure proper operations, safety, security and maintenance of equipment and facilities, and coordinates necessary maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintaining appropriate records and prepares operational, programmatic and administrative reports as required.
  • Promoting and marketing aquatic and recreational programs and activities to the public and coordinates with community groups and other organizations to assist in developing and expanding recreational opportunities.
  • Supporting facility operations by responding to telephone inquiries, greeting visitors and providing accurate information regarding programs, activities, rules and services.
  • Managing and performing general maintenance and clean-up duties at the facility, including, but not limited to, emptying trash receptacles, sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors, wiping down tables, chairs and other furnishings, replenishing restroom supplies, and cleaning concession areas, restrooms and fields.
  • Enforcing all applicable safety, facility rules and regulations and administers first aid as required.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
