About The Position

This position provides direct technical support to a Pollution Control Monitor, Supervisor & Pollution Control Monitor, Senior to install, maintain sewage flow monitoring equipment as directed. This equipment is used for monitoring the sewer collection system, billing surrounding municipalities that utilize City of Atlanta wastewater services, rainfall monitoring, and surface water monitoring activities. The role ensures compliance with City, State, and Federal Water Pollution Control Regulations, the First Amended Consent Decree & Contractual wholesale wastewater obligations. This is an entry-level position responsible for highly technical monitoring equipment installations and repairs for the Department of Watershed Management, Environmental Monitoring Division. The position acts as technical entry-level support and advises intermediate supervisors. Areas of responsibility are typically unique within the department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental, Biological Sciences or Geophysical Science, OR equivalent combination of experience which will be considered under prescribed guidelines
  • At least one year of experience in Flow or Remote Monitoring.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to pass both state and federal background checks.
  • Knowledge of Electronics, general tools and their respective uses, process control or sewer flow/rainfall monitoring equipment.
  • Knowledge of pass confined space entry certification after receiving classroom training.
  • Skilled in understanding maintenance and/or construction activities.
  • Skilled in comprehending standard workplace safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to comprehend all applicable laws, standards, OSHA, and NIOSH safety regulations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, technical leads, managers, city staff including Division Chiefs, Bureau Directors, Legal Staff, and Commissioner and members of the general public.
  • Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner, have good organizational and technical skills.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and interpret technical reports, technical manuals, and related material.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, calibrate, and repair sewer flow monitoring equipment in manholes, surface water monitoring stations, remote camera stations and rain gauges for use in hydraulic modeling studies, wholesale wastewater billing and SSO mitigation efforts.
  • Assist staff in remediating spill sites by removing debris and disinfecting areas for proper cleanup and disposal of related sanitary debris.
  • Monitor historical problem sites due to precipitation through websites and rain gauges throughout the City for site inspection and field actions.
  • Locate, identify, and inspect asset issues, notify inspectors, and visit spills at facilities or sites in the service area, locating new issues for correction.
  • Monitor and protect waterways of the State through inspection of creeks and stormwater drainage systems within the City of Atlanta.
  • Attend meetings with modeling staff and IJ partners, gather and disperse information from these meetings.
  • Conduct color dye tests and sonar tests for flow and blockage results.
  • Perform Class 1, 2, and 3 repairs (High/low Flows, Dead batteries, sensor failure, lighting damage, modem reset/failure, Data retriever, etc.).
  • Perform site maintenance (Manhole entry, equipment installations, programming equipment, cutting trees and grass).
  • Perform office and warehouse tasks (Data processing for IJ analysts, inventory management, safety meetings, mandatory classes, and daily vehicle inspections).
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
