The Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition (MEJC) is seeking a strategic Policy Director to lead its policy team and advance a people-centered climate justice agenda for Michigan. The director will supervise and develop staff, fellows, interns, and contractors; shape legislative priorities in partnership with the organizing team, members, and frontline communities; and represent MEJC in Lansing, the press, and coalitions. The role involves analyzing legislation for its impacts on frontline communities, supporting advocacy and research, and managing campaign budgets, spending, metrics, and grant reporting. The 2027 policy focus includes expansion of fossil gas, carbon capture, and hydrogen projects, alongside MEJC’s Energy Democracy work opposing Investor-Owned Utilities and data center developments. The position is hybrid and open to candidates anywhere in Michigan, with regular travel to Lansing during legislative sessions, communities in West Michigan, and the Detroit office occasionally. Some evening and weekend work and out-of-state travel are required. A valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and reliable transportation are required; MEJC reimburses travel expenses.
