About The Position

Applications are being accepted for part-time Police Services Aides to support Police Department operations, functions, programs, and activities. This is a civilian position within the Police Department. You must be at least 18 years of age to apply. This position will work a regularly scheduled shift on weekday evenings (4 to 9 p.m.) and weekends (8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and may substitute as needed for full-time or part-time staff who are unavailable to work their assigned shift (any weekday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., any weeknight from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and/or any weekend shift from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., or 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.). Scheduled hours are subject to change depending on Department operational needs. Availability to substitute on holidays is expected with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. As a Police Services Aide, you will perform a wide variety of clerical and administrative functions that support and assist police personnel and the public but do not require the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer. We're looking for individuals who are responsible, dependable, punctual, and attentive to detail and who have general knowledge of record keeping practices and procedures and previous clerical/administrative support experience. You must be committed to providing excellent customer service, as you'll interact with the general public, residents, business owners, and staff on a daily basis. It is truly a team effort in the Gaithersburg Police Department - our civilian employees work together with sworn officers to fulfill the day-to-day operations of the agency and to help members of the Gaithersburg community when they need it the most.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Demonstrated strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Previous responsible administrative support/clerical experience and ability to accurately process a considerable volume of detailed statistical and record work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and a multi-line telephone.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to requests/inquiries of customers who walk in/call in to the Police Department seeking emergency and routine information and assistance.
  • Perform data entry tasks as directed/assigned.
  • Maintain records and files containing parking tickets, traffic citations, and other police related information.
  • Assist with radio communication involving police situations.
  • Receive and process payments for parking and traffic violations.
  • Process requests for copies of reports and other information.
  • Conduct research and prepare reports on department-related matters/issues or work on special projects as directed.
  • Perform routine office assistance tasks such as typing, filing, copying, faxing, and scanning when requested.
