About The Position

The Police Service Officer II (Detention Officer) performs a variety of advanced jail functions using greater independent judgment and initiative than required for the PSO I position. This role requires exhibiting knowledge, skill, and job efficiency in the Municipal Jail and all related job assignments. The ability to act independently to handle differing situations, problems, and deviations in the work of the Municipal Jail according to priorities, policies, and program goals is essential.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED.
• Valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record.
• Must have completed one full year as PSO I and must be fully trained and proficient in the Municipal Jail.
• Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Guard the prisoner population and assume responsibility for all needs of prisoners during detention.
• Lock prisoners in cells after searching for weapons, valuables, or drugs, ensuring safekeeping of prisoners and the security of the municipal jail.
• Perform searches of inmates and all areas for contraband.
• Prepare and serve meals to prisoners and provide or obtain medical aid if needed, including appropriate dispensing of prescription medicine.
• Process booking records identifying prisoners and charges assigned.
• Maintain custody of personal belongings of prisoners.
• Inspect facilities and perform necessary duties to maintain cleanliness and organization of the jail.
• Select trustees for special work assignments.
• Prepare reports concerning inmate population and jail functions.
• May be required to perform strenuous physical activity related to prisoner control.
• Operate jail systems.
• Must have and maintain, without interruption, required certifications and licenses.
• Works assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policies.
