The South St. Paul Police Reserves is a volunteer-based unit, originally formed in 1941 as a civil defense group. It serves as an active and vital part of the city's police protection. The unit's primary responsibilities include providing assistance during emergencies like traffic control at fires or relief during floods. Members also patrol to watch for criminal or suspicious activity and provide park patrol. Additional service is provided during community events such as the Kaposia Days celebration, the "On The Road Again" Fall festival, and the Memorial Day Parade. In 2004, the unit had seventeen members who contributed over 4,000 volunteer man-hours. Each volunteer receives training in a Field Training Program, Use of Force, and basic first aid.
