About The Position

Incumbents attend, participate in, and successfully complete the POST-certified Police Recruit Training Academy before being commissioned as a Police Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The academy is held at the Jerry Keller Training Center in Las Vegas and lasts 26 to 28 weeks. After academy graduation, recruits are assigned to the Field Training Program for 24 weeks of field training. Academy training is academically comparable to a college classroom and includes demanding physical fitness requirements. The role requires recruits to maintain physical fitness and meet academy standards, complete firearms and other weapons qualifications, comply with department rules and values, and maintain a valid Nevada driver license. After academy graduation, officers may be assigned any hours, days, or shifts, including weekends and holidays, and may be subject to call-back or overtime. Recruits must study learning materials during off-duty time and purchase equipment required for the position, including a vest upon academy graduation. Candidates must meet minimum education, age, citizenship, licensing, and peace-officer appointment standards. The selection process includes application screening, written and fitness examinations, and—if successful—a background investigation with an interview, polygraph, drug test, psychological evaluation, medical examination, and hearing test. Candidates selected for potential hire must also pass required NV POST physical fitness examinations before attending the academy. Starting annual salary is $63,128. Salary increases are listed at academy completion and at specified milestones through 20 years after hire. The listed salary figures exclude future cost-of-living adjustments, retirement-system changes, and collective bargaining agreement changes.
