About The Position

This is a non-sworn, entry-level trainee position for individuals selected to attend a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) approved police academy. The Police Recruit does not perform the duties of a sworn Police Officer and does not exercise arrest powers or independent law enforcement authority. This position is responsible for successfully completing all required academic, physical, and practical training necessary to obtain licensure as a Texas Peace Officer. The Police Recruit participates in structured academic and practical training designed to develop foundational law enforcement knowledge, physical readiness, professional conduct, and ethical decision-making. While awaiting academy attendance or during academy enrollment, the Recruit may perform administrative, clerical, observational, and support-related assignments that do not require sworn authority. Upon successful completion of the police academy, attainment of TCOLE licensure, and formal swearing-in, the Recruit will be promoted to the position of Police Officer. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to obtain a Peace Officer License from the State of Texas (TCOLE) within one year of hire date
  • Meet minimum eligibility requirements established by TCOLE for licensure
  • Possess a Class C Texas Driver’s License as of hire date
  • Ability to learn, comprehend, and apply modern law enforcement principles, criminal and traffic law, procedural requirements, and departmental policies as presented in a structured academy environment.
  • Ability to retain detailed information and demonstrate mastery through written examinations and practical exercises.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to prepare clear, organized, and grammatically correct written assignments and training documentation.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and respond appropriately to feedback.
  • Ability to interact professionally and respectfully with supervisors, instructors, peers, City personnel, and members of the public.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented training environment and adapt to a structured, paramilitary setting.
  • Ability to meet and maintain physical fitness standards required by the police academy.
  • Ability to participate in defensive tactics, firearms training, physical conditioning, and scenario-based exercises.
  • Ability to maintain composure, sound judgment, and appropriate decision-making within a controlled training environment.
  • Ability to adapt to stress and demonstrate resilience during academically and physically demanding training conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete a TCOLE-approved police academy within the required timeframe.
  • Participate in classroom instruction, firearms training, defensive tactics training, physical conditioning, emergency response simulations, legal instruction, and scenario-based exercises.
  • Maintain required academic standards, demonstrate satisfactory progress in all phases of training, and adhere to academy rules, regulations, and standards of conduct.
  • Study, understand, and apply federal, state, and local laws, criminal procedures, departmental policies, and ethical standards presented during training.
  • Perform administrative, clerical, and logistical support duties prior to or during academy training, which may include report processing, data entry, records management assistance, equipment inventory, community event support, and other general office functions.
  • Participate in observational assignments or ride-alongs with sworn personnel strictly for training and familiarization purposes.
  • Maintain high standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical behavior at all times.
  • Adhere to all department policies, procedures, and codes of conduct.
  • Demonstrate reliability, accountability, sound judgment within the training environment, and respectful interaction with supervisors, academy staff, City employees, and members of the public.
  • Perform other related training or support duties as assigned that do not require sworn peace officer authority.
