About The Position

The West Sacramento Police Department is seeking dedicated and motivated individuals to join their team as Police Recruits. This is a recruiting and training level classification for candidates qualified to learn the duties of a Police Officer. The Police Recruit will attend a designated California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved Police Academy to receive basic training in law enforcement, police procedures, first aid, and physical fitness. The department is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive work environment with opportunities for learning and professional growth. They prioritize community engagement and building strong relationships with the public. Upon successful completion of the Police Academy, recruits will be sworn in as probationary Police Officers.

Requirements

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of appointment to a probationary Police Officer position.
  • Possession of a valid California driver license at the time of appointment.
  • Free of felony convictions under California Government Code, Section 1029.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
  • Must pass the West Sacramento Police Department Physical Agility Test prior to appointment.
  • Must undergo a police background investigation, including polygraph, fingerprinting, and drug usage history.
  • Must pass a medical pre-placement examination, psychological examination, and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must agree, prior to employment, not to resign and accept employment with another law enforcement agency for a period of twenty-four (24) months from the date of appointment to Police Recruit.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a driving record with fewer than four (4) negligible operator points.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Must be able to shave facial hair if it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment.
  • Must submit a completed City of West Sacramento application form and a resume.
  • Proof of a passing "T" score of 45.0 on the POST Entry Law Enforcement Test Battery, taken within twelve months of the date of application, may waive the written examination.

Nice To Haves

  • An applicant who qualifies for veterans’ preference and successfully places on an eligibility list for initial entrance into employment with the city shall be advanced one rank on the final eligibility list.
