About The Position

The City of Hilliard is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. This role involves patrolling a designated area to ensure compliance with laws and ordinances, responding to emergencies, preventing crime, apprehending criminals, and assisting citizens. The Hilliard Division of Police emphasizes a Community-Oriented Policing philosophy, requiring officers to adopt a problem-solving approach and interact regularly with residents to address community concerns. Officers will drive police vehicles, enforce traffic laws, make arrests, transport individuals, investigate incidents, preserve crime scenes, gather evidence, and present testimony in court. They are also responsible for maintaining records, preparing reports, and interacting with the public and other officials.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent certificate.
  • A combination of education, training, and experience that would allow the incumbent to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities related to law enforcement.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws related to law enforcement.
  • Thorough knowledge of law enforcement methods, principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • General knowledge of municipal government structure and process.
  • Skills in unarmed self defense.
  • Knowledge of the geography and streets within the Hilliard metro-area.
  • Good interpersonal and human relations skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise sound reasoning and good judgment.
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to interpret and apply principles, concepts, methods, laws, ordinances, and techniques to field conditions.

  • Successful completion of all phases of the Selection Process prior to appointment.
  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • Compliance with training directives.
  • Adherence to all applicable Federal and State safety laws, rules, and regulations and City safety policies/procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol a designated area ensuring compliance with all applicable State laws and City ordinances.
  • Answer calls when a crime is suspected or an emergency exists.
  • Take action to prevent crime and/or apprehend a criminal.
  • Maintain safety.
  • Assist citizens in a wide range of emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Drive a police vehicle during all hours of a day, in various conditions.
  • Enforce DUI and traffic laws.
  • Make arrests, detain and/or control persons, sometimes requiring the use of physical force.
  • Transport prisoners and committed mental patients.
  • Investigate accidents, determining conditions, causes and other pertinent facts.
  • Conduct investigations of crimes, preserve crime scene, gather and preserve evidence.
  • Report unsafe conditions, such as obstructions in streets.
  • Answer inquiries and assist stranded motorists.
  • Check doors and windows of homes and businesses for security.
  • Secure and execute warrants.
  • Present testimony in court.
  • Load, unload, aim and fire handguns, shotguns and other agency firearms.
  • Assist and provide aid to injured persons; notify families of injury and death.
  • Look for and investigate conditions and situations which may indicate a crime is about to be, or has been committed.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports of incidents and activities.
  • Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informers.
  • Where juveniles are involved; interview parents, appear in court, and work with school authorities.
  • Direct and regulate traffic.
  • Attend neighborhood meetings to address and evaluate the concerns of citizens.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
