About The Position

The University of North Texas System is seeking a Police Officer for its UNT Police Department. This role involves patrolling the University campus and surrounding jurisdiction, enforcing criminal laws, ordinances, traffic laws, and University regulations. The position requires working day and night shifts, potentially under stressful conditions and in inclement weather. The UNT Police Department is a dual-accredited department committed to professionalism and community service, serving a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 20.5 years of age at time of application.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States (with specific requirements for legal permanent residents).
  • Good moral character and ability to furnish acceptable character references.
  • Understanding of and willingness to abide by the Police Officers Code of Ethics.
  • Physical ability to perform Police Officer (Law Enforcement) duties.
  • Ability and willingness to work long or irregular hours, on various and changing shifts, sometimes under severe emotional stress and inclement weather.
  • Ability to react quickly and effectively under emergency (high stress) situations.
  • Demonstrates professional demeanor and superior oral communication skills.
  • Ability to formulate effective solutions to problem situations in accordance with statutes, regulations, and training.
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
  • Must be able to maintain the security and integrity of critical organizational infrastructure.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, criminal justice, sociology, computer science, or a related field.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols the campus area and surrounding jurisdiction by vehicle, bicycle, and foot, both day and night.
  • Enforces municipal and state laws, ordinances, traffic laws, and UNT policies.
  • Provides service to the campus community 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
  • Conducts research on, works on, or has the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and maintain its security and integrity.
  • Generates appropriate paperwork required from the position.
  • Inspects and maintains any and all equipment issued to them.
  • Demonstrates initiative and encourages service and process improvements.
  • Ensures compliance with policies, statutes, safety guidelines, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates and encourages honesty, fairness, and ethical conduct.
  • Delivers responsive, courteous, and accurate service.
  • Regularly engages with the community to develop and foster positive public/police relationships.
  • Works as a member of a team, placing team goals ahead of individual goals.
  • Demonstrates professional demeanor and uses interpersonal skills constructively to resolve conflicts.
  • Reflects reasoned judgment and common sense when identifying/resolving issues with a focus on optimal outcomes.
  • Uses appropriate discretion in resolving problems, performance issues, and complaints.
  • Ensures quantity and quality of work activities are directed toward optimal resource utilization and outcome.
