About The Position

The University Police Department (UPD) is responsible for law enforcement, physical security, and emergency response at Cal Poly Pomona. The department is staffed by trained police officers, professional civilian staff and auxiliary personnel and is operational 24 hours-a-day, year-round. The peace officers of this department have statewide police authority and are vested with the same law enforcement powers and responsibilities as the municipal police or sheriff's departments in any California community. The department serves as "first responder" for a broad range of crisis issues on the campus including medical aid calls, injuries and environmental emergencies. The department is responsible for response to all emergencies, crime reports and investigations on campus (except homicides and missing persons per the Kristin Smart Act). In addition, the department offers a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the safety and security of the community and support the mission of the university. These responsibilities are carried out through a set of core values that reflect commitment to the highest standards of excellence and incorporate the community oriented and 21st Century policing philosophies. The University Police Department is part of the Administrative Affairs Division whose mission is to provide quality fiscal, human and facility services in support of the university community through partnerships and innovative solutions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Driver License, Valid and in State
  • Valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
  • Police Officer Cadets in this classification must be or have: Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
  • Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.

  • Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program, including obtaining a Basic Course Certificate
  • Valid CA Driver’s License
  • Minimum one year related experience

Responsibilities

  • Enforce local, county, and state laws.
  • Investigate criminal and non-criminal occurrences, make arrests, interview witnesses, transport prisoners, and testify in court proceedings as required.
  • Patrol the campus and other property owned or operated by the University using various vehicular, foot , and stationary assignments.
  • Investigate traffic collisions, enforce traffic laws, provide safety escorts, respond to radio calls accordingly, respond to emergencies as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Build rapport between professional/civilian employees, students, volunteers, staff, faculty and visitors by promoting public trust through ethical behavior and adherence to a set of core values as set forth by the Division of Administrative Affairs.
  • Seek opportunities to foster partnerships and build diverse teams within the university community.
  • Support the principles of community oriented policing.
  • Write reports to accurately describe events as they occur or as they are described to the employee.
  • Draft traffic collision sketches and crime scene diagrams as needed.
  • Generate reports on a computer.
  • Participate in public speaking as requested by superior officer.
  • Address housing residents, conduct public tours, safety talks.
  • Communicate with a multi-ethnic and diverse community.
  • Participate in training which includes classroom instruction, and on-the-job training.
  • Meet all training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and Department policy.
  • May be required to act as the Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Sergeant or Corporal.
  • Be expected to take supervisory charge of civilian employees during times of emergencies.
