About The Position

Under close supervision of a sworn peace officer, this non-sworn police trainee classification is designed specifically and solely for the purpose of employing police officer candidates in a non-sworn status during the initial formalized basic police officer training phase. Incumbents of this class attend a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified police officer training academy designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the criminal justice system and specialized training in various laws, police practices and procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid and physical conditioning, and to participate in departmental training/orientation programs. Upon successful completion of a Police Officer Basic P.O.S.T. Training Academy, incumbents will be appointed to and sworn in as a probationary entry-level Police Officer with full police authority.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 21 years of age upon appointment.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes; free from color blindness.
  • Hearing within normal limits.
  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles, for out-of-state applicants, a valid driver's license is required, with a good driving record, and ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
  • Free of any felony convictions.
  • A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
  • Fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
  • Of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Successfully complete a P.O.S.T. certified basic law enforcement training academy for entry level Police Officers, adhere to academy instruction policies and guidelines, learn, understand, interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures; learn to use and properly care for firearms; observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places accurately; conform to stressfully induced conditions, think and act quickly in emergencies and judge situations and people accurately; learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system; Efficient in basic mathematics; understand and follow oral and written directions; write clear, concise and comprehensive reports; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contracted in the course of work; meet City and P.O.S.T. standards, endurance and agility; operate a motor vehicle skillfully; meet the requirements for police officer contained in the California State Government Code; read, write, and speak English.
  • Effectively operate a motor vehicle on City streets.

  • California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) test scores with your application. An applicant must submit a letter from the testing agency on agency letterhead at the of application submission. Acceptance of other agency's T-scores is subject to verification with the test agency and test results accepted must be from within the last year. The minimum passing T-score is 42.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in and complete a prescribed law enforcement officer-training program for the entry-level police officers , including training in report writing, laws of arrest and seizure, defensive driving, California Vehicle and Penal Codes, officer survival , and physical fitness.
  • Perform a wide variety of police support duties that may include dispatching and records, duties acting as desk officers , and/or assisting in planning and research activities.
  • Operate police information equipment including computer system s , teletypes and telephone s to enter and research information at the direction of a sworn officer or professional staff member.
  • Assist in processing, packaging, labeling, storing evidence; photocopies, files, indexes and locates police records and related paperwork.
  • Learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques.
  • Perform administrative functions as assigned.
  • Provide traffic direction and control for special events.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Assist in a wide variety of other tasks in the department as assigned.
