This recruitment is for Police Officer - Lateral In-State and Police Officer - Lateral Out-of-State positions. A Police Officer performs general duty police work or specialized police work in the protection of life and property. Responsibilities include interacting with a diverse population, employing discretion in solving problems, maintaining public order, preventing crime, enforcing laws and ordinances, conducting investigations, making arrests, issuing summonses/citations and warnings, and assisting the public. Work may involve routine patrol, preliminary investigations, and traffic control. Incumbents may be assigned specialized duties such as training recruits, motorcycle or bicycle patrol, tactical operations, K-9 handling, crime scene investigation, detailed follow-up investigations in the Criminal Investigations Division, organized crime investigations, and aerial surveillance. Work assignments are made by a Police Sergeant or superior, and methods are checked through inspections, report reviews, and discussions. Work requires occasional physical exertion under adverse circumstances. Officers are subject to rotating shifts, weekend, and holiday work. A Police Officer - Lateral is an experienced Arizona peace officer not required to attend the Mesa Police Academy and is assigned to a Field Training Officer upon hire, requiring successful completion of the program. A Police Officer - Lateral Out-of-State is an experienced peace officer hired at the Police Officer Recruit salary while studying for Arizona certification waiver exams. Upon successful completion, they are promoted to Police Officer - Lateral and assigned to field training officers.
