About The Position

This work unit exists to provide a safe environment conducive to and supportive of education at Fort Lewis College. This purpose requires many roles from unit personnel. The preservation of a peaceful community, providing physically safe grounds and buildings, enforcing federal, state, local and campus statutes and policies, protecting persons and property, controlling crime, educating the community on crime prevention, providing emergency services, assisting other College departments in their mission, providing security for special events and specifically providing a full range of professional police services. This job will be posted through until 11:59 p.m. on 10/09/2026. The hourly rate for the Police Officer Intern is $30.01; if candidate meets qualifications for Police Officer I, the rate is $31.53. Requirements

One year of college coursework (30 semester hours).
Possession of current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification.
Currently enrolled in a state approved law enforcement academy with a graduation date in the spring of 2026.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must be able to satisfactorily pass a background investigation, demonstrating: no Felony or Domestic Violence convictions.
No more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver license.
No alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and no repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten (10) years.
Basic current valid Colorado P.O.S.T. certification is required at the time of hire or obtained upon successful admission and completion of a certified Colorado P.O.S.T police academy.
Must possess and maintain a current valid driver license and must be in possession of the license by the testing date.

If candidate meets qualifications for Police Officer I, the rate is $31.53.
If candidate meets both the experience and possesses a current valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification and passes all conditions of employment, the opportunity to promote to a Police Officer I may occur sooner upon completion of training and once the candidate meets the minimum qualifications for a Police Officer I.
Lateral transfers are accepted at a Police I level if applicants training, experience, or a combination thereof exceed one year.

Responsibilities

Trains for a period of one year through either a combination of a Colorado P.O.S.T. certified police academy and with a Field Training Officer (FTO) to meet the minimum qualifications of a Police Officer I with the state of Colorado or, if already Colorado P.O.S.T. certified, through training with the assigned Fort Lewis College FTO.
Determines whether or not a crime has been committed within the jurisdiction of Fort Lewis College.
Discovers all facts pertaining to the alleged crime.
Gathers and preserves evidence.
Develops and follows up on all investigative leads.
Locates and apprehends the perpetrator(s).
Aids in the prosecution of the offender(s) by providing evidence of guilt which is admissible in a court of law.
Testifies effectively as a witness in court.
Must be able to work ALL shifts and in the case of emergencies, or inclement weather and in the case of covering a last-minute shift for another officer.
