About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to provide Law Enforcement Services for the clients, staff, and visitors of Cherry Hospital, O'Berry Center, and the Caswell Center. Officers investigate and enforce a variety of criminal cases, including crimes against person(s) and property violations. Work involves enforcing state laws and regulations within jurisdictional boundaries and responding to calls for assistance in the state government complex. Investigates criminal offenses involving state property, state employees, or visitors to state property. Interviews person(s) to obtain information pertaining to crimes and at scenes. May be required to check buildings during non-working hours and at night to ensure security of property and equipment. May be required to return or stay over during non-working hours to complete work assignments. May be required to fill in during staff shortages. Interviews person(s) to obtain information pertaining to crimes. Complete investigative reports pertaining to criminal acts reported in or around state buildings and property, and interviews victims and witnesses. May arrest suspects in connections with crimes or violations of law. May testify in court as needed. The Police Officer is charged with the provision of the state and federal law enforcement for this facility and/or surrounding areas for with the Police Department has "mutual aid" agreements. Employee in this position possess full powers of arrest to control and enforce traffic, criminal investigations, search and seizure, service of warrants and subpoenas, suspect apprehensions, collection and preservation of evidence, enforcement of chain-of-custody, and participation in court proceedings. Position responds to complaints and/or calls that require intervention and/or investigation. As such, position serves as a patrol officer, detective squad member, or crime prevention officer. MUST BE ABLE TO WORK 12 HOUR ROTATING SHIFTS. THIS POSITION WILL BE PRIMARILY ASSIGNED TO CHERRY HOSPITAL BUT WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH O'BERRY NEURO-MEDICAL CENTER AND CASWELL DEVELOPMENTAL CENTER.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.
  • Must complete all requirements for an NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification, including completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training, in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission within one year of employment.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid NC Driver's License.
  • Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts.
  • Ability to work in conjunction with O'Berry Neuro-Medical Center and Caswell Developmental Center.
  • Ability to report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of investigative techniques for misdemeanor and less serious felonies.
  • Knowledge of obtaining/issuing search warrants.
  • Knowledge of crime scene management and fingerprint lifting tools/techniques.
  • Ability to recognize community problems, analyze alternatives, recognize solutions and follow-up.
  • Knowledge of criminal statutes and case law for initial and follow-up investigations.
  • Ability to use office equipment such as computers and printers.
  • Ability to use discretion during criminal investigations, arrests, warrant services, and interaction with members of the community.
  • Ability to initiate, complete, and properly document problem-solving projects focused on crime, fear of crime, and quality of life issues.
  • Ability to distinguish and determine violations and take appropriate action with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through interpersonal interactions and written documentation.
