The purpose of this classification is to protect life and property, to respond to the needs of the general public, to deter criminal activity within the community, to enforce all city statutes, ordinances and the laws and regulations of the state, and to perform investigations, special details, and specific assignments within an assigned division. Essential functions include enforcing applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations; patrolling designated areas to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; responding to calls for service including domestic disputes, abuse, assaults, burglaries, thefts, fatalities, traffic accidents, property damage, alarms, bomb threats, searches, rescue operations, public service duties, and civil issues; preventing and discovering crime; apprehending and processing criminals; conducting investigations; performing rescue functions; providing assistance and backup to other officers; following safety procedures; inspecting and maintaining assigned police vehicle, uniform, weapons, and equipment; performing research functions; responding to complaints and questions; creating and maintaining positive public relations; maintaining records and files; preparing various forms and reports; communicating via telephone and two-way radio; and attending shift meetings and training sessions. Additional functions may include special operations/detail activities such as crime prevention/analysis, crime scene specialist, special events coordinator, school resource officer, desk duty, media/public information, special response team, drug task force, traffic enforcement, beach and waterfront patrols, negotiations, juvenile, homicide, narcotics, environmental protection, training, and teaching. The role may also involve coordinating special events, serving as a liaison between the police department and schools, coordinating with store loss prevention officers, escorting city personnel, and attending community meetings.
