The purpose of this classification is to provide protection of life and property, enforcement of federal, state and local laws, response to emergency/non-emergency situations, investigation of criminal activity, and specialized duties within an assigned division/unit which may include the Road Patrol Unit, Traffic Unit, Marine Unit, or other area. Essential functions include enforcing all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security. This involves patrolling designated areas, responding to calls for service, preventing and discovering crime, conducting preliminary investigations, performing rescue functions, enforcing vehicle operating laws, responding to traffic accidents, providing traffic and crowd control, transporting individuals, making fingerprint records, participating in court activities, and providing assistance to other officers and agencies. The role also involves operating and maintaining law enforcement equipment, following safety procedures, preparing various reports, operating a computer, maintaining records, communicating effectively, and creating/maintaining positive public relations. Assignment to specific units like the Marine Unit, Traffic Unit, or Community Activities Unit may involve additional specialized tasks.
