About The Position

The Fredericksburg Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certified Police Officer. Under general supervision, Officers perform general law enforcement work in order to preserve the public peace, to protect lives, property, and the rights of the public. A police officer enforces statutory laws and municipal ordinances. Work involves patrolling of City streets, River Bank, City Parks and neighborhoods to deter crime; apprehend and/or arrest violators or suspects; responds to calls for law enforcement assistance; investigates traffic accidents and enforce traffic regulations; and gathers information for criminal investigations. A police officer also assures appropriate custody and control of prisoners. (Attends court and mandatory off duty details)

Requirements

Current Virginia DCJS Certified officer with 3 years’ experience in law enforcement.
No more than two moving violations within previous 24 months
No current or previous revocations of suspension of license within previous 60 months due to a moving violation
Undergo a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records inquiries to both the CCRE and FBI
Undergo a physical examination, subsequent to a conditional offer of employment
Polygraph Examination
Must complete lawfit course

Responsibilities

Reduce crime and maintain public peace by patrolling the city via various methods.
Become familiar with patrol zones, geographic locations, offenders, and potential problem areas.
Inspect troublesome areas and recommend security measures.
Apprehend and arrest individuals violating laws and city codes.
Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations for various criminal cases.
Interview witnesses, informants, and suspects to gather information and evidence.
Secure and analyze crime scenes, collect and process evidence.
Enforce traffic and parking laws, including DUIs.
Investigate traffic accidents and aid in controlling traffic.
Assist disabled motorists and perform traffic control at public events.
Engage in community service activities to promote the department's positive image.
Investigate domestic disputes and make appropriate referrals.
Investigate complaints and prepare reports for lost and found property and persons.
Work with other law enforcement agencies to share information and apprehend suspects.
Assist prosecutors in preparing cases for trial and serve as a credible witness in court.
Seek and serve arrest and search warrants, and handle court documents.
Complete and review paperwork documenting activities and incidents.
Maintain police vehicles and equipment.
Perform administrative duties such as dispatching and records processing.
Attend training and possibly serve in special roles like Field Training Officer or K-9 unit.
